What is Netball?

Netball is a fast-paced, non-contact team sport primarily played by women but increasingly gaining popularity among men and mixed teams. Similar to basketball, netball involves passing a ball down the court with the goal of shooting it through a ring to score points. However, unlike basketball, players in netball are restricted to certain areas of the court based on their position (and wear bibs to show their team and others where they’re playing), and dribbling, stepping with the ball, or contacting the player with the ball is not allowed.

History of Netball

Netball originated in the late 19th century as a variation of basketball tailored for women. The game was developed in England, influenced by the rules of basketball, which had become popular in the United States. Early adaptations of netball took shape in different countries, particularly in the Commonwealth, leading to unique regional rules and styles. By 1960, standard international rules were established, allowing for the first Netball World Championships in 1963. The game has since grown, with millions of players worldwide and strong followings in countries like Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and South Africa.

How and Where Netball is Played Today

Netball is commonly played on indoor or outdoor courts, with seven players taking the court to play. Each player has a specific position with designated areas on the court. Matches, depending on level of play, run for 60 minutes or less, and is split into four quarters. The sport is widely organized through schools, clubs, and national leagues, with a major focus in the Southern Hemisphere. Notable competitions include the ANZ Premiership in New Zealand, Suncorp Super Netball in Australia, and the Netball World Cup, which attracts top teams globally every four years.
